THE HECTIC BARREN LAND IN KILIFI COUNTY

By Samson Amani

The Bofa Maweni residents in Kilifi County cry foul as the foretold "Future Hazzard" as how most of the elders in the region termed the situation, have been seen causing a great impact in their land.

Almost thirty thousand building stones (blocks) are mined each single day using quarrying machines. From the quick earning of their daily bread, the Bofa residents have gone blind from seeing the permanent danger that is likely to be caused by this destructive quarrying activity.

                                  Effects
1.Void ugly pits-Both manual and machine mining causes great impact in land by leavimg huge pits after the miners move to another portions of land for quarrying.

2. Displacement of people- Almost a thousand families have been displaced following the quarrying activity that leads to destruction of the land. Despite of being displaced, the poverty have become part of their life.
3. Deforestation - The activities have led to destruction of trees in the region, that in future, as termed by the elders, "the future  Hazzard" will be accompanied by the desert state.
4. Diseases - Some of the pits left, resulted into ponds where most of the children in the region are carrying out fishing activities, a choice that exposes then to a great danger of being infected by the water borne diseases such as bilharzia, since the waters are stagnant.

Moreover, the quarrying activity have led to poor and unhealthy yields of the agricultural products as a result of the removal of the fertile top soil.

These and more impacts, the County government of Kilifi have failed to enact laws to help curb the situation that's likely to cause more and serious effect to the coming generations.

  1. The main problem is that the locals who probably work in the mine ain't educated to this extent. They need people like you to enlighten them since what the leaders think about is just making money and for long as they are paid, money won't stop them from mining coz that's where all their mindset lies on.

Here it goes. First of all my life in University have been so amazing, but also challenges have been always on my side, not to weaken my strengths and burrying my dreams, but to make me strong in seeking the hidden golden skills and experience in MASS COMMUNICATION program. Dozens of questions lingered in my mind when my eyes came in contact to a huge billboard of the Technical University of Mombasa. But finally, a single answer satisfied my thousand questions____"I was turning over a new leaf of my life." A cool photo taken after a TV practical lesson in the  media lab My first week in University was too harsh to me as I rememb...
